Good: I finally knuckled down and wrote the first two thousand words of the story that's been banging around in my head for the last six months.

I've known the premise for six months. I've known the main character for five. Four months ago I had a very rough plotline. Three months ago, I came up with the rest of the cast; ten major cast members in all, some more major than others.

Today, I actually sat down and wrote: words on screen (not paper, I hate writing first drafts on paper). Two thousand words.

Bad: If this story is as long as I think it's going to be, that's 1.3 percent of the overall story. (In other words: I have about 148,000 words to go.)

Don't worry, though. I'm breaking it up into three discrete segments, 50,000 words or so apiece. (For those of you who know of and remember the ? Cycle, the total on that ran to about 19,000 words, if I'm not mistaken. Then again, that was a series of vignettes that happened to resemble a coherent storyline.)

What surprised me was that it took me about an hour and a half to put those 2000 words to paper, including several false starts and troubled editing of written lines. (The total number of words I wrote today, including deleted text, probably runs between 2500 and 3000.) I probably would have written more, but Dave came home, and I still feel kind of bad ignoring him and making him fend for himself.

Which is why I'm going to end this here.
