Keychain

My standard keychain is heavy enough that I notice it when I have it in my pocket. It holds six keys (including a key to a padlock I don't actually own anymore - it was on a car-top clamshell that I took to Indiana and that was stolen by the workmen our landlord hired. I should probably get rid of that key), several customer-loyalty keyring cards, the ID card for my gym (memo to self: start going again), and a faded, rubber, one-armed Gumby. Since I don't like noticing it when it's in my pocket, I tend to avoid having it there. When I'm at work, it goes in the top drawer of my desk; when I'm at home, it hangs on the toggle of the floor lamp in the living room.

When I'm off work for a significant amount of time - a weekend, say - I can reduce the weight of the keychain by quite a bit; the house key, the car key, the Giant supermarket card and the gym ID card are on a little separable secondary ring (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] solaas!), so I detach the bulky part of the keychain and just carry the little secondary ring. This means, among other things, that I can usually carry it in my pocket without noticing it. That means that I don't automatically hang it on the lamp toggle when I get home. And that means that, when the significant amount of time that I'm off work gets too long, or when I'm really distracted leaving the house (today, for example, was paper-recycling day), I don't always remember to reattach the little secondary ring to the main body of the keychain.

The upshot is that I can't open my desk drawers or get into the supply closet today, because Gumby, all of the loyalty cards I don't use often, and my office keys are at home, hanging on the lamp toggle.

Le sigh.
