Spin cycle

For the last two or three days, my primary task and function has been to clean and reorganize my bedroom in preparation for Dave moving in. During this I have discovered several essential properties of bedrooms and cleaning (or, perhaps, rediscovered, as I'm sure I knew this once):

  • There is more on the floor than I think there is.
  • There is less trash on the floor than I think there is.
  • Regardless of whether or not it looks like I can just stack things neatly and the mess will go away, I will end up with many more stacks than I thought I would, and there will be some things left over that don't go into stacks well.
  • I am allergic to dust.
  • Things left sitting for a while, especially clothing, acquire dust in quantity.
  • While I can, in fact, condense all of the books from all of my boxes into a single large box, this does not mean I should do so.
  • If I condense all of the books from all of my boxes into a single large box, I will end up with a large number of empty boxes and nothing to do with them.
  • No matter how big my bookshelf is, and no matter how well I think I've fitted my comic compilations to the shelf to which they've been assigned, there will always appear one more to vex me.*
  • Putting the bookshelf behind the entertainment center is only a good idea if you don't intend to use the bookshelf.

In other news, judging from the way it's all wet right now and seems to be spinning, the world should be ready to go into the dryer at any moment.

    * I have six volumes of Oh My Goddess! in Japanese which might end up on another shelf (language reference), which means that I'll have about five inches to play with on the comics shelf. I'm not sure yet how much room the language reference section is going to take up, though, so I may be stuck leaving Dirty Pair: Sim Hell on its back in front of the comics until I break down and get a new bookshelf just for my comics.

Yeah, dust plays hell with my allergies, too. Thank god for Actifed ... Anyway. Have you thought about getting a longbox for your comics? Those things can fit under beds or be set unobtrusively in a corner, and you can stack things on top of them if need be. They're also pretty cheap; not much more than $5-10 for one, I think, so long as you get the cardboard type. There's also plastic crates that you can get at Kmart and similar stores. Also very stackable and very cheap.

I actually have a longbox and several accordion folders for individual issues of comics; those work nicely. The trouble is the collected books (which would probably be called "graphic novels" by some); they don't fit well in accordion folders, and I can't tell them apart in longboxes. Bookshelving seems to be the only good solution that I can find. :)

Ain't "Space Lion" a wonderful song? (tell me you've seen the Bebop episode it's from...)
