This one's for people who are familiar with both Chez Geek and Munchkin (or one of the variants thereof). (And, seriously - if you read this journal and you're not familiar with both of those, you should be.) Note that these are generalizations about the mechanics.

When I say "profession", I mean things like Chez Geek's Job and Munchkin's Class and Race.

i find the delineation between the cards for munchkin and chez geek interesting, as in many ways, they represent the same thing to me.

i see the tools you mention for chez to be the same as drawbacks and benefits in munchkin.

profession corporate drone.
benefit: ridiculous spending power.
drawback: 1 action to do anything.

while the slack goals change from card to card, that's a reflection of the difficulty for that particular job to reach the same point in roughly the same amount of time.

the character class/race modififers in munchkin seem much more fluid, in that you don't need to have one in order to make it to the goal, but they help you get there.

of course, in both, i've seen people with one slack when someone else has made it to 22, and someone make it to level 10 while others are yet to defeat their first level one beastie.

i think the most important part of both, above and beyond their rules aspects, comes from the ability to give you something to identify with. to give you a role to play.

As my familiarity with Chez Geek is limited, just yet, I'm factoring knowledge of certain CCGs and RPGs into my answers, as well as experience with an old Discovery Toys game, "Jewels in the Attic," which has been sadly ignored by the "C"PG industry. Possibly because Discovery Toys may still be around, and zealously protects their patents (or at least used to). The console game Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles is another good source for working on this sort of concept.
