EDG still thinks that SpaceShipOne looks like it collided with a migratory flock of ballpoint pens, though.
cpip cackles.
quantumseraph hysterical laughter. ... the mental images are kinda scary on that one, EDG.
EDG [to quantumseraph]: Aren't they? :D
Gaaliah is too busy laughing hysterically to asses the scariness of a flight of ballpoint pens.
quantumseraph [to EDG]: Very! *imagines being chased by a flock of ballpoint pens, fears this*
EDG can make people laugh. That's somethin'. ;)
EDG [to quantumseraph]: Why would they chase you? Are they nesting ballpoints? (The caps are actually the shells, and the parent ballpoints stay with the hatchling "refills" until they grow their protective carapace and can fly on their own...)
cpip <to EDG> fears EDG.
quantumseraph fears EDG LOTS. (... they'd chase me because I tend to capture the stragglers from the flock and use them in painful writing-on-paper experiments which end in their eventual exhaustion and death.)
Amber protests quantumseraph's cruelty.
quantumseraph attempts to look like a responsible (nonVapulan) scientist. ... really.
cpip waves a protest sign.
Gaaliah says "It's their Destiny. Or maybe their Fate. I forgot."
EDG . o O ( Ballpoints are the only pens that actively rear their young and stay in family and clan units for life. Fountains are largely solitary, gathering only during mating season; they abandon their young at an early age, and infant fountains learn to squirt their ink as a defense early in their lives. Gels are a relatively recent breed, and while they pair for life, the pairs tend to be reclusive; they are the shortest-lived of the extant species. The nearly-extinct quill is, ironically, the only flightless pen. They were hunted extensively (and with high rates of success) for their plumage; their numbers grew dangerously small in the mid-19th century, but they have staged a comeback recently. )
cpip [to EDG]: ...I'm not sure if I'm scared or in awe of your wit. :p
EDG [to cpip]: There's wit in there? ;)
cpip [to EDG]: Pfft.
Gaaliah <to EDG> decides to move on to something less sanity-damaging. Like contemplation of Great Cthulhu.

Date: 2004-10-02 07:34 pm (UTC)The story involves paper clips, wire hangers, and classic racing bicycles as the egg, larva, and adult stage of a mysterious alien creature. Or maybe the story involves a character's descent into raving paranoid lunacy. It's hard to tell.
It even won a Hugo Award the year it was first published. Track it down and read it sometime.
