In rapid succession:

  • The brakes failed on my car last night.
  • On the freeway.
  • During rush hour.
  • No, nobody was hurt.
  • No, I didn't get into an accident.
  • In fact, everybody involved made it home just fine.

Expanded: A deer ran in front of my car while I was coming home on Tuesday night, and stopped dead. I had to do likewise, and in the process hammered the brake pedal into the ground (and a nice pair of skid marks into the road). (For what it's worth, I stopped about an inch from the deer, who then bounded off into the woods.) Ever since, I'd been having a little trouble with pressure on the brake lines, but I could still drive fine until about halfway up the interstate, at which point I pressed the brake pedal - and it kept going without doing anything.

Fortunately, through low speed and using the gearbox to slow down, I made it home in one piece. (There were some immensely terrifying moments on the freeway, however.)

In about 15 minutes, I'm going to call, again in rapid succession,

  • AAA, and
  • the mechanic to whom I'm towing the car.

Hopefully this is an easily-fixed and inexpensive problem (like "oh, your brake fluid's low" or something).

    *sigh*

  • The car needs a new caliper on the passenger side (which explains the persistent grinding I've been hearing over there for about three weeks) and... something to do with the master cylinder, I believe. Grand total, after parts, labor, and tax: $320 and Tuesday at the earliest.

  • I received my copy of Megatokyo volume 1 yesterday. While I realize that almost all of it's available for free on the web, it's nice to have the book in my hands; if nothing else, I can make people read it without having to sit through 100+ pages with large images to load on a low-bandwidth connection. Also, I can read it in places in which I cannot normally read Megatokyo - like, say, anywhere without a computer.

  • I have been shamefully bad today. I took the day off to relax, and did not get a single thing accomplished. (Okay, I lie. I found the Wavebuster, the Ice Beam, and the Gravity Suit in Metroid Prime.)

    Am not tired. Really.
