As absurd as it sounds, right now the Baltimore Orioles are in first place in the American League East. The Minnesota Twins, the AL Central leaders, and the Oakland Athletics, leaders of the AL West, have each played and won one more game than the Orioles have, so they technically have better records and thus the Orioles aren't tied for the lead in the American League. It's worth noting, though, that of the teams in first place in their divisions, only the Los Angeles Dodgers (interesting bit of trivia: originally, this team was the Brooklyn Trolley-Dodgers) have fewer losses than the Orioles do.
This situation - the Orioles being on top of the AL East - wouldn't have come about if the Boston Red Sox had won in their game against the New York Yankees last night, so even though it resulted in net benefit for my favored team, it felt a little weird to be rooting for the Yankees...
