Memetic mutation

A new variation of the "5/23 book meme" has appeared in [livejournal.com profile] agentkinesis's journal:

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 23.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.

1a. Grab the nearest book in english.
2a. Repeat 2-4.

1b. Grab the nearest doujinshi.
2b. Repeat 2-4.

It's probably a personalized version, but it's still an interesting mutation.

(A doujinshi - don't pronounce the "u", just hold the "o" a beat longer; or, just spell it dojinshi - is fan-created manga, or Japanese comics. They're often based on existing comicsmanga, and are often encouraged by the creators of those existing manga.)

Very interesting. Very specific, really; after all, I'd have to know what doujinshi was, before I could find the nearest example of it...

Whoops. I'd meant to define that. Done now. -_-;;

...manga fanfic. Interesting. I can't see having the energy or interest for it, but, then, you'll note I don't exactly produce reams of fanfic myself... and given the extra work involved in the art and such, wow. I wouldn't have thought there was an entire market of it.

Oh, there's quite a large one in Japan, and plenty of fangirls/boys over here in the US that cause people to import and sell it at conventions, or over Ebay, or... :)

[eyes her small stack of doujinshi] Unless you read Japanese, they're often pretty pointless, to be honest... but sometimes you find a gem that is grand even without total comprehension of the words. For example, I have a Naruto one that uses far too many kanji for me which is excellent - and it's not even yaoi, it's completely gen, so none of those looks. :) The art's just amazing, though, and the book is very high quality - I'm going to be selling some of my douji, once I get around to translating the titles, but that one's a keeper.
