Lyrics kvetch

I miss lyrics.ch. (Was that it? Man, it's been so long I barely remember.)

Whenever I go looking for lyrics online, the sites I find are ones that only take user-submitted lyrics. (This is, I presume, to avoid the copyright problem.) Which is all well and good - the Wikipedia Effect ought to mean that the lyrics are more or less correct - except that the "update these lyrics" link is difficult to find in a lot of cases; even when you manage to find the link, the new lyrics need to be reviewed by an "editor" instead of just being posted correctly; and the "editors" take weeks, if not months, to get around to checking and uploading submissions. All of which combine to mean that the lyrics on these pages are often - possibly usually - wrong. (Quick tip: it's "love pleads", not "love pleases". The latter doesn't even scan.)

It'd be nice to have a lyrics repository that either made some effort to provide correct and/or official lyrics or operated on a real wiki model.

Ever thought about building one?

Thought about it? Yes. Have the technical expertise or the webspace to do it? No...

Strangely enough, building a wiki doesn't seem to take that much in the way of expertise.... and its very friendly to trial and error from what I've noticed.

The webspace though, thats a kicker.

Hm. I admit that I haven't ever looked into what it would take to build a Wiki, but I may look into it.

The trick with webspace is that I actually do have space - but it's far too small for a project of that scope.

I was astounded when the Lyrics server was taken down. The arguments used against it were flimsy and never truly explained how posting lyrics to songs was causing damage to artists.

My additional gripe with the lyrics servers is that they're full of annoying and cluttering ads and being mind-boggingly slooooow.
