Katie.com

I am pleased to note that Plume, the subsidiary of Penguin Group which publishes Katie.com, is re-titling the book (caution, PDF). The new title is A Girl's Life Online, which is, frankly, a really uninspiring title - but then, Katie.com was just a really freaking stupid title, so...

(No, I'm not saying that katie.com is a stupid name; and, in fact, if Katie Jones wrote a book about this or any other aspect of that website, I'd call it a perfectly fine name. I'm saying that the ".com" part of Katie.com is a relic of the Internet boom - note that the original publishing date was 2000, when you'd double sales if you stuck ".com" onto something - and, frankly, a part that I suspect we'd all rather forget. I miss the Internet boom, but I hated the naming conventions.)

I sent an email too .-)

And yeah, everything.com is a stupid name. It is nearly as bad as all of those eWhatevers and iWhatevers.

Indeed, last year I wrote a damn proposal for an European Network Of Excellence in Web Engineering, and my boss insisted that it should be entitled EWENE. I asked how it should be pronounced, and he said, oh, eWeenie.

I did tell him what the term Weenie typically means, and how ridiculously stupid it sounded to be an e-Weenie... but the thing went through anyway (http://www.schwinger.at/EWENE/).
