Punchline
Okay. Briefly: on Wednesday, my car's battery died, and due to an effective hard-sell by the AAA driver sent to jump the car, I ended up paying $70 for a tow. I said that night that I was waiting for the punchline.
On Friday I took the car to the mechanic, who charged me $10 to tighten the alternator belt - neither the alternator nor the battery were bad, it was just that the alternator wasn't charging the battery. This is not the punchline.
This is: on Saturday I left my lights on when I parked the car.
Fortunately, I was at home, so it was a simple matter to get me jumped and on my way. Still, I felt pretty dumb.
On the other hand, I'm not replacing the alternator or the battery.
